一、 An old dog cannot learn new tricks.
意謂老狗學不了新把戲，比喻人老了，難以學習新東西。
learn：（v） 學習、受教、記得
─ learn by experience. 通過經驗而學乖；learn by mistakes 通過犯錯而學精明。
─ learn by heart 諳記，用心去記住
─ a learned （形容詞） man 學者；a learner 初學者 （n）
trick：（n） 把戲、惡作劇、詭計
─ play dirty tricks on someone 對人玩卑鄙的手段
─ play a trick on him 跟某人開玩笑
─ know a trick or two 形容某人有點小聰明，相當有辦法
─ trick flying （飛機） 花樣飛行
─ Tom tricked （動詞） Mary into believing that he was a millionaire. 湯姆欺騙瑪麗以為他是百萬富翁。
二、 Kill the goose that lays the golden eggs.
意謂殺鵝取金蛋，竭澤而魚，指因短視而失去長遠利益，或造成敗局，如同拔苗助長，欲速則不達。
lay：（v） 生蛋，擺放，安排
─ lay the table for dinner 預備擺桌子開晚飯
─ lay a trap for 設陷阱害他人
─ lay the blame on someone 嫁禍給某人
─ the storm laid the crops 暴風把莊稼吹倒。
Layman （n） 指門外漢，外行；layoff （n） 解僱；layout （n） 設計、形勢
goose ─ I am goose all over. 形容渾身起雞皮疙瘩。
─ goose phrases 陳腐的句子，濫調
─ a wild goose chase 無益的追求
─ goose step 德國閱兵式的鵝步操，直膝直腿的步操。 ◇
