我們下面要學的習慣用語是：「give the devil his due」。 「due」在這兒的意思是應得的報酬或者回報。從字面意思看來give
the devil his due這個習慣用語就解釋：「給魔鬼應得的回報。」我們常說：好有好報，惡有惡報。那麼give the devil his
due是不是「惡有惡報」的意思呢？請你看下面這個例子再做判斷。
That man has been stealing, fighting and selling drugs. But give the devil his
due, when he saw the little girl fall into the river, he risked his life to save
her.
這段話說：「那人偷竊、打鬥、販毒……無惡不作，但是平心而論也不能抹煞他做的一件好事。當他看到那小姑娘掉進河裏的時候，他冒著生命危險救了她。」
從這個例子看來give the devil his due含義是盡幹壞事的人做了好事，也不能抹煞他的功績。
Give the devil his
due這個習慣用語起始於好幾百年前當大家都真把魔鬼當回事的時候，當時很多人認為幹壞事的人就是魔鬼附身，把魔鬼和壞蛋劃上了等號。但是隨著時代的進展devil這個詞的意義也在發展。如今devil不一定就指惡人。
讓我們再看一個例子，這是一個政界人士在私下和朋友說幾句知心話，評論屬於對立派別的另一個人。他們正竭盡全力阻撓這個人當選為議員。
We're doing everything we can to beat Bill. But to give the devil his due,
he's honest, knows a lot, and would probably do a good job if he gets elected.
這位反對Bill的人說：「我們正在全力以赴試圖擊敗Bill，但是平心而論Bill有不少優點，他為人誠實、知識豐富。如果當選很可能會工作的很出色。」
從這個例子可以看出give the devil his due帶有的含義是：實事求是的看問題，承認別人的優點。 （VOA） ◇
