美國地質調查局在香港時間24日上午9時36分，錄得意大利中部一次黎克特制6.2級強烈地震，震央位於中部城市佩魯賈東南面76公里處，即羅馬之東北約140公里，震源深度為10公里，屬淺層地震。
有消息傳出指，其中一個小鎮的鎮長向當地電台表示，鎮內有一半建築物倒塌。
意大利首都羅馬在是次地震中亦感受到強烈震感，有當地媒體表示在地震時，羅馬的部份建築物搖晃大約20秒左右。
繼上午9時36分的6.2級強烈地震後，當地已發生多次餘震，其中最強烈的一次餘震達到5.5級。
意大利位於地震帶，對上一次造成重大傷亡的地震為2009年，該次地震發生在中部拉奎拉地區，震級為6.3級，羅馬同樣感受到強烈震感，事件中有超過300人喪生。
官方消息指已有最少6人證實在地震中死亡，部份市鎮損毁嚴重。阿馬特里切鎮（Amatrice）鎮長說，有民眾埋在倒塌建築的瓦礫堆下，並說「全鎮都毀了」。鄰近地區阿庫莫利鎮（Accumoli）鎮長亦發佈消息指，該鎮有4人在地震中死亡。◇
