這個習慣用語出現在上個世紀，意思之一是一種小孩玩的遊戲，那就是把標上號碼的點點連在一起，按號碼的順序連在一起，就會出現一張可愛的圖畫。
所以join the dots或者connect the dots的另外一個意思，就是把分散的線索和訊息聯繫在一起。
例句：Once I started to join the dots, I realized that, if they hadn't called me by now, I probably wasn't getting the job.
