【美國習慣用語】up in the air

我們要去夏威夷休假，飛機票都買好了。可是航空公司突然宣佈破產，結果我們甚麼時候能去還不知道呢！So our plan is up in the air。Air是空氣，up in the air就是在空氣中，也就是懸在空中，意思就是：某件事還沒有確定。 

通常我們會說，某個計劃還沒有確定，the plan is still up in the air。要是有的人對某件事沒有辦法作出決定，就可以說their decision is still up in the air。下面讓我們來看一個例句，這是一個建築公司的老闆在說他們的一個項目為甚麼遲遲不能開工。 

例句：Now with the new regulations about building next to an airport, it looks like we might not be able to start construction of the golf course until next year. The whole project is up in the air. 

這位老闆說：「因為對在機場附近興建設施有了新的規定，因此我們在年底之前要開始修建高爾夫球場看來是不行了。整個工程就因此懸而不定。」 

Up in the air這個習慣用語倒是挺生動的，說某件事情在空氣裏，自然是懸而未決，也就是不確定的意思了。是啊！這個習慣用語在18世紀中葉就開始流行了，只是當時的人說in the air，而不是up in the air。那是從甚麼時候開始說up in the air的呢？是到了20世紀人們才開始用up in the air。（美國之音）◇
